Learn about the process of claiming for Industrial Deafness

How Hearing Loss Compensation Works

Hardworking Australians in numerous industries have been exposed to high noise levels. It's the most common workplace hazard and can seriously damage your quality of life. According to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, around 111,000 Australian workers experienced occupational hearing loss in 2020.

You may be eligible for compensation if you've developed hearing loss due to repeated exposure to loud noise.

Many Australians don't know their rights or how the industrial deafness claim process works. At Industrial Deafness Australia, we aim to support workers every step of the way and secure the compensation they're entitled to receive.

If you suspect that you have noise-induced hearing loss, the claim procedure will be as follows:

  • We'll schedule a visit with an audiologist for an initial hearing test and arrange a consultation with one of our legal advisors.
  • A medical specialist will then conduct a thorough hearing examination to determine the extent of your industrial hearing loss and provide us with a detailed report.
  • We'll gather all the necessary documentation and submit your claim.
  • The insurer's doctor will assess the extent of your hearing loss.
Note: This may not be necessary if you only claim hearing aids.
  • The insurer will make an offer. If you don't find it acceptable, you'll visit an independent medical specialist who will conduct a final assessment.
  • You receive monetary compensation (if eligible) and hearing aids.

Industrial Deafness FAQs

If your hearing loss is from work-related exposure to high sound levels, you may submit an industrial deafness claim.

Our job at Industrial Deafness Australia is to ensure you’re compensated fairly for your hearing loss. Our team will strive to provide you with the best hearing aids available and appropriate lump sum compensation (if applicable).

If the insurer disputes your claim, our skilled legal team will resolve any dispute to ensure you receive the compensation you’re entitled to.

The payout you’ll receive from noise-induced hearing loss can vary greatly. It largely depends on the extent of your hearing loss, when you finished working and the state you worked in.

For instance, Victorian workers can receive between $700-$2,100 for each 1% hearing loss, so long as their industrial deafness exceeds 10%.

Estimating the payout on your own can be challenging as various factors influence it. We will gather all the necessary information and help you maximise your compensation entitlements.

It’s worth remembering that each hearing loss case is unique. Some cases may be clear-cut and impossible to dispute, drastically decreasing the time necessary to settle a claim. However, this is often not the case.

Most claims take between 6 and 12 months to process. Our team will do everything possible to minimise the claim period.

Your first step is to contact our team and explain your situation. We’ll then schedule a free hearing test and legal assessment by one of our claim specialists. We’ll submit your claim once we’ve received your medical report and collected all the corresponding documentation.

The insurer will review the claim and may send you to their specialist to examine your hearing. You’ll receive an offer you can accept or refuse after this visit. Further evaluations might be necessary to reach a final offer if your case is disputed. Only about 10% of claims are disputed.
